Internationally acclaimed artist Kiki Smith’s secular re-interpretation of a monumental Victorian-era stained glass window is the final and most prominent addition to the renovation efforts that have reshaped New York City’s Eldridge Street Synagogue. The more than two-decade-spanning community-driven conservation initiative has turned the National Historic Landmark into the Museum at Eldridge Street, now open to the public for exhibitions and cultural events. Smith honors the Lower East Side with its history as a multicultural melting pot and reflects on New York City’s role as an immigration crossroads that has shaped American society for centuries.
