Robischon artist Amy Ellingson has recently completed a large-scale installation, “A Day in the Sun,” in the new Terminal 1 of the San Diego International Airport. Ellingson has intentionally designed smalti-glass mosaics for six structural columns, complementing the floor design that also incorporates smalti-glass into the terrazzo matrix. The small, hand-cut glass tiles will gently reflect and refract light and color, emulating, as intended by the artist, the nature of the ocean. The mosaic designs of the columns are meant to evoke the spaces glimpsed between pier piles along the shore - standing as visual slices of dramatically triated layers of color, reflective of light, water, sky and atmosphere. Terminal 1 at the San Diego International Airport will officially open on September 22 of this year. As travelers leave the TSA area on their way to their concourse, Ellingson’s stunning, permanent installation will offer an unexpected opportunity for engagement.
